The Layers are the primary method for objects in a drawing by function or purpose. Layers can reduce the visual complexity of a drawing and improve display performance by hiding information that we don’t need to see at the moment.
We can create, delete, and rename layers, change their properties, set property overrides in layout viewports, and add layer descriptions.
Layer can define multiple line type and we can hide or lock the layer, With the help of layers, we can define the multiplier type of wire in electrical diagrams.

LA(shortcut command) & Spacebarwe can create new layer, delete layer, import/export layer etc

Layers and Layer Tools

1.New Layer

Creates a layer with a default name that we can immediately change.
LA(shortcut command) & Spacebar> ALT+N Spacebar ( for new layer)

new layer

New layer tab , short cut (Alt+N)

2.New Layer Frozen

Creates a layer and freezes it in all existing layout viewports. This button is accessible from the Model tab or layout tabs.
If we draw an object in the model by layer frozen then we could not find that object in the layout.

3.Delete Layer
LA(shortcut command) & Spacebar> ALT+D Spacebar (Layer Delete)

The following layers cannot be deleted:

  • Layers 0
  • Layers containing objects, including objects in block definitions
  • The current layer
  • Layers used in an external reference
  • Layers in a partially opened drawing (Not applicable to AutoCAD LT.)
Note: Be careful about deleting layers if you are working on a drawing in a shared project or one based on a set of layering standards.
4. Current Layercurrent L
Any new objects are drawn on the current layer. The green check mark on the Layer Properties Manager indicates the current layer.
The Current layer cannot be frozen.
LA(shortcut command) & Spacebar> Select the layer > Double click on the layer (by mouse) > Current layer
                                   Current layer

5. Layer On/Off And Freezing
We can turn layers off and on as needed, objects on layers turned off are invisible in the drawing.
Freezing layers is similar to turning them off and on. the only difference between in on/off and freezing layer is we can’t freeze the working or current layer but we can turn the layer on/off.

6.Locking Layers
We can prevent objects on selected layers from being unintentionally modified by locking those layers and The locked layer could not be selected by the crusher.
LA(shortcut command) & Spacebar> Select the layer > Click on lock tab Lock tab
locking layer 1
7.Layer Color, Linetype, Lineweight  layer type
We can change the color, line type and line weight according to the requirement, So what we have to do is click on the color box, now it is white, then change the white color to whatever you want, same we have to do for the same line type and lineweight.

How to Import and Export the Layer
1.Export the Layer
We can export the layer from one drawing to another.(Layer extension or folder saving is .las)
LA(shortcut command) & Spacebar> Layer States Manager Layer00 >New >New layer state name> ok> Export > Give the file name (exp. Test.las) & Save

2. Import the Layer
We can import layer from any drawing but that layer must be exported in .las format.
LA(shortcut command) & Spacebar> Layer States Manager Layer00 >Import > Select “.las” > Open > Restore State
