Two common solutions used for panel temperature management are the thermostat and the FFTDU (Fan Failure and Temperature Detection Unit). Although both can be used to control or monitor panel temperature, they are designed for different levels of functionality.

The answer depends on the size of the panel, cooling requirements, level of monitoring, and importance of the equipment.
What Is a Panel Thermostat?
A panel thermostat is a simple temperature-control device that switches equipment such as cooling fans, heaters, or air conditioners ON and OFF when the panel temperature reaches a preset value.
For example:
Temperature rises above setpoint → Thermostat ON → Cooling fan starts
When the temperature falls:
Temperature falls below setpoint → Thermostat OFF → Cooling fan stops
A thermostat is primarily a temperature-switching device.
What Is an FFTDU?
An FFTDU is a more advanced panel monitoring and control device.
It can monitor:
- Panel temperature
- Cooling-fan operation
- Fan failure or stall conditions
- Temperature alarm conditions
Depending on the model, an FFTDU may also provide relay contacts, analog outputs, or communication interfaces for connection to PLC, DCS, or SCADA systems.
Its operation can be represented as:
