Industrial or Process automation is simply that a placement with robot and machine do the same task or work instead of human.
Automation is form greek word.

Application or Management Level (HMI and SCADA)

The upper level where the logic and design is done.
Collect measurements and status data from the process.
HMI can be part of SCADA but SCADA can never be part of HMI.
